I am continuing my series based on a previous blog post, “Blogs Business Owners Should be Writing” we’re on Part 3 of 5: My Bestsellers, a reflection of the first 6 months, and the last 6 months.
(If you’re just tuning in to the series go back to the blog to read the first two of the series)
This blog feels like one of my most vulnerable posts yet, because as I reflected on what has been my bestsellers’ it made me laugh that in the last 6 months I haven’t done a single website copy project or email copywriting (which, I thought would be my bestsellers in the long-run).
I am going to lay out what projects were my bestsellers in the first 6 months of launching Kira Writes Copywriting, and in the last 6 months of business. One thing to note is that I am not going to go into detail about the projects in the middle, which were a variety of projects.
The purpose of this blog is to reflect on what was popular when I first started, and what I’ve been working on most recently.
Don’t read this blog as my portfolio, because it doesn’t include everything (although, to be honest, my portfolio isn’t updated either….whoops!).
Bestselling copywriting services in the first 6 months of Kira Writes Copywriting
In the first 6 months of business, I was running Kira Write Copywriting as a side gig, but it was also when I got my first big projects including:
- Website rewrites and template customization
- 13 email copywriting series prefaced by an email framework analysis
Technically, email copywriting was only 25% of my jobs during this time, but it made me over 50% of my income earned up to that point. Why? Well, email copywriting is involved, and this specific project was 13 emails long including an email series framework to evaluate their current email flows, and suggest new series/emails so that they could increase their conversion rate in the first 45 days after someone subscribed to their emails.
If you’ve checked out my current Services page you may notice that I no longer list website template customization on my services, and that’s because I am not a trained web designer. While my several years of working in IT alongside brilliant web and app developers assisting with UX copy taught me several things about implementing and testing websites, I don’t want someone to think I am an actual web designer. I am capable of updating elements, colors, and other simple elements of design on a website, I am not a designer so I removed it to simply the page.
I will say that I am excellent at testing websites, and doing the background stuff, so if you hire me to write your web copy, I am happy to implement and test the site functionality for you!
Bestselling copywriting services in the last 6 months of Kira Writes Copywriting
In the last 6 months, I’ve been running Kira Writes full-time, and during this time, SEO blogs have been 70% of my projects. I’ve written blogs for functional medicine practices and a children’s boutique. While these industries are very different, they both benefit from SEO blogs because it brings more traffic to their website without the pressure of purchasing.
What does this mean for you?
What does my bestseller’s list from the first and last 6 months of my business have to do with you? Well, these projects are services that all businesses benefit from and should be hiring experts to write.
Let me explain why.
Website Copy
Your website is your business’ home, so the moment a user opens your website it should feel, look, and sound like your brand. Whether or not you have a storefront, your website should 100% feel like someone walked into your store. Not only should it fully represent your brand, but it should also be easy to navigate by giving your users clear instructions on where to go next.
However, if you’re going to take a shot at it then you should include these elements:
- Home page with a clear unique selling point (USP) at the top of page
- Format your site for skimming – it’s tested that people skim like the shape of an F
- Clearly direct your readers where to go next once they finish reading a specific section or page
- Don’t write large paragraphs, instead keep people reading with short snippets that naturally lead to the next section
- Write about the transformation users can expect to have, and the benefit of purchasing
- Focus on what problem your product or service solves
- Make it easy to read
- Use consistent brand language (this helps with SEO too)
SEO Blogs
SEO blogs are vital for any and all businesses because it gives people a reason to visit your website without the pressure to purchase. When someone visits your site to read your blogs it actually increases the chance they will buy something or hire you, because people often have to visit more than once before taking the plunge.
Additionally, search engines prioritize sites that are consistently updated, so adding consistent SEO blogs to your site maintains your best friend status with the search engines.
It’s quite easy to write great content, but knowing how to conduct SEO keyword research, naturally, implement those keywords, and then be able to tie it back to your product/service and provide a clear CTA. That’s the magic of having a copywriter write your blogs.
While I recommend hiring a copywriter to get the most out of your blogs, here are the elements you need to include in each blog your write:
- Search for keywords using a free SEO word search such as Surfeo to determine which words you should be using to get the most engagement. Surfeo shows you how many people are searching for the words you’ve searched, and other like words you can use.
- Naturally include keywords in headings, and subheadings (also use Heading 1 and Heading 2 in your blogs – this is what search engines look for)
- Write content that is entertaining, motivating, or educational and solves the reader’s problem
- Focus on the benefit to the reader
- Clear call to action (CTA) on what the reader should do after they read your article
