Do you ever look at someone that’s great at what they do, and wonder if their talent was intrinsic, or discovered later in life and intentionally perfected?
As a parent, when I spot my kid’s interests I wonder if that will be the one thing they love for the rest of their lives. My youngest is 2 and can pick up a tune in a matter of seconds. One of my older kids loves to build things and can figure out new ways to create and fit things together which initially seemed impossible. And, the other has a mind that is constantly moving and analyzing. I wonder, will these be the interests and skills that guide them to their career, or will they turn into hobbies that are left on the side as they learn something new?
I tend to think that the thing we love as kids ends up being the thing that makes us the happiest, and therefore, the thing we become great at because we spend so much time doing it.
We may not always choose those things as professions, but they are the thing that we go back to over and over again. This is certainly true for me when it comes to writing and researching. My love for reading, writing, and asking questions has remained the same, but how I use those skills has evolved over time.
Let’s dive into the details of how Kira became Kira Writes Copywriting.
Chapter one: a dream was born, and imagination cultivated
My childhood memories are defined by writing stories, daily diary entries, and dreaming of the day I publish a book. I wrote down every thought and emotion I had almost every day of my life as a kid. “Dear Diary….” started my day as I jotted down my expectations for the day, and ended my day as I recalled the events of the day.
I also took every writing assignment to the extreme. In middle school, I wrote a 20-page story about a hula hoop taking over the world, which was only supposed to be a short story (like 2-3 pages). My classmates were less than thrilled when it came to reading them aloud. Me on the other hand, I acted like this was my debut as a published author!
This is the season that my overactive imagination was cultivated, which is crucial to great writing. If you can’t imagine creative stories and get into the heads of characters, then no one will enjoy your writing. I view each audience I write for as characters in my client’s book, and I am able to write to those personas (with some research of course), because it’s quiet easy for me to relate to people and then write what they need or want to see.
Chapter two: discovering the beauty of words
In my adolescence, I decided I wanted to be an English professor. I thought I would enjoy teaching, and I loved reading and writing, so it made sense. In my junior year of high school I shadowed an English professor for a day, and somehow randomly chose the department head that had been there for a million years (I chose him because he looked like a stereotypical college professor. Think white hair and balding wearing a newspaper boy hat, slacks, loafers, and blazer with elbow patches.), and was enamored with the beauty of discussing poetry and how certain words make us feel.
Looking back, this experience has had a great impact on me. Now, as a copywriter, I pay special attention to how words and phrases will be read and decide which word to use based on the feeling it evokes in the reader.
While informative and inspiring, my dream of being an English professor didn’t last long.
Chapter 3: researcher Kira makes her entrance
Right before applying to colleges, I decided I wanted to pursue a political science degree. Which is exactly what I did. I relocated to the other side of the country and was dead set on pursuing a career in politics.
College was a highlight in life for me, a time I felt the most like myself as I pursued my interests, was mentored by a wonderful professor, and cultivated the future version of Kira. I also met my husband in college – and no, I had no intention of finding my husband in college, so don’t come at me.
Other than planning to run for a political office as soon as I finished my Ph.D. I wanted to be a lobbyist in D.C or conduct research for anti-human trafficking. This is the season that I cultivated my analytical mind and ability to dissect information, and difficult topics and present them in a way that’s easy to understand. When I didn’t immediately pursue academia I thought these skills were lost, which was devastating, but now I see how learning how to ask the right questions, and conduct research has helped me become an amazing copywriter.
I spend a significant amount of time researching my client’s industry, brand voice, target audience, and current audience engagement prior to writing the first draft, to make sure that I am crafting copy that the reader actually wants to read to solve existing problems.
Chapter 4: undercover UX copywriter
My dream career was sidelined for several reasons, but during that time I worked for a state agency in IT, which was definitely outside of my comfort zone. However, the several years I worked there gave me some of the most useful skills I possess as a copywriter.
I was responsible for managing two applications that educators used throughout the state, which included working with developers to create new functionality and respond to users’ feedback. In addition, I trained educators on how to use the application, discussed the data, and created technical documentation to go along with the training.
Working for the state is where I learned about cultivating a great user experience, by thinking like the user when writing copy for websites, applications, brochures, and technical documents. I had no idea what I was doing would be so beneficial to me in just a few short years.
Now, as a copywriter, I can help clients with technical difficulties, implement copy into their websites, blogs, etc. with ease and know how their users are going to respond to the functionality they are presented with.
While I didn’t love the job then, the skills I learned are invaluable! It’s hard to write digital copy without understanding how users are approaching the copy, where they are clicking from, and where they will go next. My understanding of websites and overall user experience has helped me enormously!
Chapter 5: Kira Writes Copywriting was born
At this point, I put teaching and writing on the back burner of my dreams, but I knew that I wanted to work for myself. I just wasn’t sure how to do that without first getting another degree to prove myself worthy of people’s business.
I managed a few organizations’ communications on the side, and I knew that I loved the writing side of communications but the design didn’t come naturally to me. I constantly thought, “how can I make a job out of just writing, but without having to go back to school for journalism, or marketing??” (I am an academic at heart, and I feel – well, felt like – you needed a degree to back up your skills, I’ve since been proven wrong).
That is how copywriting fell into my lap. I had been writing copy for years at this point, so all I needed to do was to hone in on those natural skills and refine them to be more effective. So, that’s what I did.
Chapter 6: Here to serve you with research-backed and personality-packed copy
Each and every stage of my life was a stepping stone to where I am now, the owner of Kira Writes Copywriting.
Now, I am here, ready to serve you and support your dreams through research-backed and personality-packed copy. My passion is to help others, and as a copywriter, I get to do that by writing copy that resonates with your audience, entertains people and {genuinely} compels them to take action.
What’s my dream for Kira Writes Copywriting?
My dream for Kira Writes Copywriting is to use my skills for the greater good. I have a deep passion for educating our communities about human trafficking, and I would love to work with more nonprofits and businesses that directly serve populations that are at greater risk of being trafficked, or that serve survivors of trafficking.
Maybe one day, we will be a full agency.
Who knows. What I do know, is that each step of the way will be prepping me for what’s ahead and I am here for it!
